School formal dress codes: what Australian schools allow, and when formals happen

No state-wide school formal dress code was found for this guide: schools set their own. Here's what 12 published school and ball rules say, and when formals, valedictory dinners and balls fall, state by state.

Zelma High Neck Maxi Dress in wine by Runaway the Label, a high-neck full-length gown for a school formal

Checked against the sources listed under Further reading on 8 October 2026. School dates and rules come from published school and exam-authority pages and can change from year to year, so check your own school's formal pack and the latest exam timetable.

In short

  • Most of the 12 school codes reviewed for this guide set only a general standard such as "formal", and dates vary. As an Australian dress code, "formal" is also known as black tie optional: usually a longer dress, or at times a pantsuit in an elegant fabric, or a suit and dress shoes, typically with a tie (SBS). Formals in the examples run from late January (WA, Santa Maria) to December (ACT, Erindale). See also Black tie vs formal.
  • No state-wide school formal dress code was found: schools set their own. Queensland's state-school procedure and Victoria's government-school policy leave dress codes to each school, and in 2022 Queensland's then education minister said public schools consult their communities on dress for social functions such as Year 12 formals (Women's Agenda).
  • Only 2 of the 12 codes set detailed limits, and both cap splits at the knee. Hems range from just above the knee (Lighthouse Christian School's Year 6 guidelines, Qld) to below the ankle (Kerikeri High School's 2019 ball code, NZ).
  • Some schools enforce the code at the door. Caulfield Grammar (2023) and Waitākere College (2024) say students who aren't suitably dressed are refused entry (Caulfield's code covers partners too), so check your school's formal pack before you buy.
  • Timing varies by state and by school. In the published examples, WA Year 12 balls run from late January to May (Santa Maria; Mindarie), SA formals from March to May (Brighton; Norwood), Queensland formals from the end of Term 1 to November (Canterbury; Yeppoon), and Victorian formals from March to June (Beaumaris; Nossal High School), with valedictory dinners in October or November (Korowa; Wantirna). Most NSW examples fall in November (Pal Buddhist School; St Mary Star of the Sea; Casula), around or after the HSC exams (NESA).
  • Parents: check the invitation (general advice). Korowa Anglican Girls' School's 2026 valedictory dinner asks parents and staff for cocktail attire, the only code found for this guide that sets a separate standard for parents. At Wantirna College's 2026 valedictory dinner, where families book tables, the dress code for the evening is formal.

Once you know your school's rules, compare them with the gowns and formal dresses in the School Formal collection.

What published school rules say

Examples from named schools, not a national standard; each row shows the document's year, because rules change.

School Event Dress rule (paraphrased) Entry and guest rules
Brighton Secondary School, SA, government Year 12 Formal, 2025 Formal or cocktail; jeans and sneakers don't count No guests; no re-entry
Casula High School, NSW, government Year 12 Formal, 2025 Appropriate formal wear Entry by ticket
Caulfield Grammar, Vic, independent Year 11 Formal, 2023 Formal Students or partners not dressed formally turned away; one guest (Year 11 or 12); bags discouraged; no re-entry
Yarra Valley Grammar, Vic, independent Year 12 Formal, 2026 Formal No entry after 7:15pm; asks for small evening bags only
Korowa Anglican Girls' School, Vic, independent Valedictory Dinner, 2026 Students formal; parents and staff cocktail Parents and staff attend
Wantirna College, Vic, government Valedictory Dinner, 2026 Formal Families book tables (tickets due 20 October)
Lighthouse Christian School, Qld, independent Year 6 Formal guidelines (uploaded 2025) Detailed; see below Guests held to the same standard; families may email a photo for advice
Brisbane School of Distance Education, Qld, government Senior Formal (page updated 2026) Not compulsory, though the school says everyone dresses up Alcohol-free; families and dates welcome
Mindarie Senior College, WA, government Year 12 Ball, 2026 Dress should suit a formal occasion Guests interviewed by a mentor teacher first
Kerikeri High School, NZ, state School ball, 2019 (as reported) Detailed; see below Students not complying turned away
Waitākere College, NZ, state School ball, 2024 A jacket and tie with dress trousers and dress shoes, or a ball outfit Students not suitably dressed are turned away
Green Bay High School, NZ, state School ball, 2025 Formal Bag check; arrive before 8pm; no re-entry

Of these 12 examples (11 school documents and one news report), 9 give only a general standard such as "formal". Two set detailed rules, and one says formal wear isn't compulsory.

The two detailed codes, side by side

Detail Lighthouse Christian School (Qld, Year 6) Kerikeri High School (NZ, 2019)
Hem May sit just above the knee, no higher Full-length, below the ankle
Splits Not above the knee To the knee only
Back Back and side cuts no lower than the shoulder blades Thin back straps not allowed
Neckline Strapless or thin straps allowed if the neckline isn't low High, no cleavage
Cut-outs Navel covered; no fabric or mesh cut-outs; two-piece only if there's no gap No cut-outs over the chest

Lighthouse says its dress expectations also cover events such as its Junior and Senior Formal Dinners. Kerikeri's code was set by an advisory group of students and staff (NZ Herald), but one student reported that many girls had to return or alter dresses already bought online (Otago Daily Times).

Bags and shoes. Some schools ask students to bring only a small evening bag (Yarra Valley Grammar), send bags to a cloakroom (Caulfield Grammar), or check bags on arrival (Green Bay High School). With no re-entry, pick shoes you can wear all night (general advice).

When formals happen, by state

In the examples here, schools set their own dates: some fall during or after the Year 12 exams, others earlier in the year. Each is one school in one year, not a rule.

State 2026 Year 12 written exams Pattern in these examples Formal dates in published examples

About the 2020 NSW guidelines. In 2020, COVID-era NSW Government guidelines let formals start the day after that year's last HSC exam (NSW Government). They were written for 2020. Among the examples above, Pal Buddhist School's 2026 formal (1 November) falls before the last 2026 HSC exam (5 November).

A planning timeline (general advice)

No official lead time for buying or altering an outfit was found for this guide. In six of the examples here, ticket sales or bookings closed about one to six weeks before the event: one week at Darwin High School and Heatley Secondary College, about two weeks at Brighton and Korowa, five weeks at Wantirna College and about six at Mindarie. Brighton and Mindarie also required forms to be returned before a ticket could be bought.

  1. When the date is announced: read the formal pack for the dress code, guest and bag rules, arrival time and ticket deadline.
  2. Before you shop: check the outfit against the rules, and ask the school about anything borderline.
  3. When you buy: allow time for delivery and alterations, and keep the tags on until you're sure.
  4. By the ticket deadline: book, and register any guest.
  5. The week before: try on the full outfit with shoes and bag; sit, walk and dance in it.

Tickets and free formalwear

No independent average cost could be verified; these are published ticket prices, each from one school in one year.

Event Year Ticket
Brighton Secondary School Year 12 Formal (SA) 2025 $105 per person
Mindarie Senior College Year 12 Ball (WA) 2026 $160 per person
Wantirna College Valedictory Dinner (Vic) 2026 $175 per person

Free formalwear. Some charities give students free outfits; check a program is running before relying on it.

  • Thread Together gave 91 HSC students in the NSW Northern Rivers an outfit to keep, with shoes and accessories (reported in 2023, ABC News).
  • The Formal Project ran a free formalwear store in south-west Sydney (reported in 2023, ABC News). Its flyer offered free outfits to students going to a Year 6, 10 or 12 formal anywhere in Australia, in store in Campbelltown (bookings from 2 August 2025) or by Zoom (The Formal Project).
  • Operation Formal Wear, run by a Lions club in Canberra, gave outfits to 289 people, including students and teachers, in 2025 and planned to continue in 2026 (Lions Clubs Australia).

For parents

  • Are parents invited? It depends on the event. Darwin High School's 2026 formal is for students only, while parents attend 2026 events at Korowa, Wantirna College and St Mary Star of the Sea College.
  • What do parents wear? Follow the invitation (general advice). Korowa's 2026 valedictory dinner in Melbourne asks parents and staff for cocktail attire (Korowa), the only code found for this guide that sets a separate standard for parents. At Wantirna College's 2026 valedictory dinner, where families book tables, the dress code for the evening is formal (Wantirna College). For what cocktail and formal mean, see Dress codes explained.
  • Walk-ins and arrivals. At some schools the arrival is an event in itself. If you're going to watch, check whether it's held outdoors and dress for the weather (general advice):

Dressing for the heat

WA Year 12 balls in January and February, and formals in November, fall in warm months. Bureau of Meteorology average maximums over each station's years of record (Melbourne Olympic Park only since 2013), not forecasts:

Place Month Average maximum
Perth January and February 31.4Β°C and 31.7Β°C (BOM)
Darwin November 33.4Β°C (BOM)
Brisbane November 28.4Β°C (BOM)
Sydney November 23.7Β°C (BOM)
Melbourne November 22.2Β°C (BOM)
  • Fabric and water. In hot weather, NSW Health advises lightweight, loose clothing, drinking water often rather than waiting until you feel thirsty, and taking water with you outdoors (NSW Health). As general advice, pick light, breathable fabric.
  • Sun at arrivals. Arrivals in the examples start from 5pm (Erindale College), so photos may be in daylight. Cancer Council recommends SPF50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen, reapplied every two hours, plus shade and sunglasses (Cancer Council Australia).

School balls in New Zealand

  • When and dress: see the NZ timing row and the Kerikeri, Waitākere and Green Bay rows above.
  • Entry: King's College in Auckland lists breath-testing equipment, possible bag searches, and declared partners, whom the college can refuse.
  • Tickets (NZD): NZ$100 at Wesley College and NZ$160 at Western Springs College in 2026. A 2024 RNZ report said ball tickets can cost from about NZ$100 to more than NZ$300, though one school aimed to keep its price under NZ$100 (RNZ via NZ Herald).

Find your formal look

Once you've checked your school's rules, browse gowns and formal dresses in the School Formal collection. For a ball or valedictory dinner where gowns are expected, including for parents when the invitation says formal, see the Black Tie & Formal collection, and for parents' cocktail attire, the Cocktail & Parties collection.

Frequently asked questions

What is the dress code for a school formal?

Most of the 12 school codes reviewed for this guide set only a general standard such as "formal", which as an Australian dress code is also known as black tie optional: usually a longer dress, or at times a pantsuit in an elegant fabric, or a suit and dress shoes, typically with a tie (SBS). Brighton Secondary School in SA also allowed cocktail wear in 2025, and Waitākere College in New Zealand asked for either a jacket and tie with dress trousers and dress shoes, or a formal ball outfit, in 2024. No state-wide school formal dress code was found for this guide: schools set their own (Queensland's state-school procedure and Victoria's government-school policy leave dress codes to each school), so read your school's formal pack before you buy.

When are school formals held in Australia?

It depends on the state and the school. In the published examples in this guide, WA Year 12 balls fall from late January to May (Santa Maria; Mindarie), SA formals from March to May (Brighton; Norwood), Queensland formals from the end of Term 1 to November (Canterbury; Yeppoon), and Victorian formals from March to June (Beaumaris; Nossal High School), with valedictory dinners in October or November (Korowa; Wantirna). Most NSW examples fall in November (Pal Buddhist School; St Mary Star of the Sea; Casula), around or after the end of the HSC (NESA), the NT example is in November (Darwin High School), and the ACT example, at Erindale College, is on 7 December 2026.

When are school formals held in NSW?

In the examples here, schools set their own dates. Most of the NSW examples in this guide fall in November (Pal Buddhist School; St Mary Star of the Sea; Casula), around or after the end of that year's HSC written exams (in 2026, 13 October to 5 November, according to NESA), and Carlingford High School held its 2025 formal on 26 September, the last day of Term 3 (NSW term dates).

When are Year 12 balls held in WA?

At some WA schools the Year 12 ball marks the start of the final year (Santa Maria College; Foundation Christian College). The examples in this guide ran from late January (Santa Maria College, 2026) to May (Mindarie Senior College, 2026), months before the ATAR written exams, which begin on 28 October 2026 according to SCSA's timetable.

Do you have to wear a long dress to a school formal?

Not necessarily. Most of the school codes reviewed for this guide don't set a length, and Brighton Secondary School (SA) allowed formal or cocktail wear in 2025. Of the two codes that do set one, Lighthouse Christian School's Year 6 formal guidelines (Qld) allow hems just above the knee, while Kerikeri High School's 2019 ball code (NZ) required skirts below the ankle.

Can you be turned away from a formal because of your outfit?

Yes, at some schools. Caulfield Grammar (2023) and Waitākere College (2024) say in writing that students who aren't suitably dressed will be turned away (Caulfield includes partners). If you're unsure, ask: Lighthouse Christian School invites families to email a photo for advice before buying.

How much is a school formal ticket?

Published prices in the examples run from $105 (Brighton Secondary School, SA, 2025) to $175 (Wantirna College's valedictory dinner, Vic, 2026), and a 2024 RNZ report said New Zealand ball tickets can cost from about NZ$100 to more than NZ$300 (RNZ via NZ Herald). Some charities have also given free outfits, including Thread Together (reported by ABC News in 2023) and The Formal Project, whose flyer offered them to Year 6, 10 and 12 students Australia-wide from August 2025.

Can you bring a date or guest to a school formal?

It depends on the school. Brighton Secondary School allowed no guests in 2025, Caulfield Grammar allowed one guest in Year 11 or 12 in 2023, and Mindarie Senior College had a mentor teacher interview guests first in 2026. Caulfield and Lighthouse Christian School hold guests to the same rules as students.
